Addiction Destroys Lives
Addicts are not the only ones suffering. Family, Friends and all around them are taken "hostage" to their Addictive behaviors, constant lies, cheating, stealing, financial irresponsibleness and the selfish attitudes that the addict exhibits. Their loved ones often have to pay the price caused by the addiction and struggle to keep their life's manageable. It is difficult for them to understand how the decent, good jewish-natured person they knew has completely transformed into someone they don't even recognized.
Addiction creates chaos, stress and unbearable fear. Jewish family and friends constantly worry about the health and well-being of the addict. They fear that call, or the knock on the door bringing them the "bad news." The stress of addiction and alcoholism in the family causes fear, blame, shame, sleepless nights, financial problems, weight loss, tears and ruined quality family time in those caught in the drug addicts or alcoholic's environment.
How We Can Help
OJA- Outreach for Jewish Addicts can give these families hope, support, and knowledge about this Addiction/disease. They no longer have to suffer alone.Interventions - Referrals
OJA provides many services for the Jewish addicts and their family including early intervention and help for those already in the advanced stages of the disease. We offer pre-treatment counseling, home-based detoxification and/or treatment and referrals to hospitals or drug treatment centers. When recommending a treatment center we keep the clients specific needs in mind. We work closely with program directors to educate them about Kosher Food and other special requirements of our Jewish community.
Family Education
One of OJA's most important functions is educational outreach. We provide information to Jewish parents about Alcoholism and Addiction so they know what their child is going through and how to help him. We teach them how to spot the early warning signs, and how to work with a child already in a recovery program. We also reach out to Jewish Schools and Yeshivas instructing them how to recognize the signs when students are experimenting with drugs. We help them identify students who have Jewish family members struggling with addiction so they can reach out to them. We educate about the many resources available to help those affected by addiction.
